IT’s been some time since my last visit to San Jose, but I still think about the meals I had at two restaurants in the downtown area. Back a Yard and SuperGood Kitchen. So, let’s start with SuperGood Kitchen. My coworker and I had a craving for ramen and also for food that wasn’t prepared … Continue reading

Escape to the Coast as Often as You Can
Today, I want to share with you my favorite beach weekend escapes on the Oregon Coast. The coast is home to 363 miles of beach, unparalleled rolling mountain ranges, enormous sand dunes, thundering waves, brilliant lighthouses, towering forests, and my favorite activities: hiking, eating, and road tripping. The fact that these can all be wrapped into one … Continue reading
Carnival Cruising: Cozumel, Grand Cayman, and Montego Bay
After a few days spent in the port of New Orleans, we were ready to sail to the Caribbean for a week-long cruise with the Lucht family. Cruising is truly an acquired taste and the verdict for me is still not really conclusive. The aspects of cruising that appeals to me is the variety of things to … Continue reading
Food, Street Entertainment, and the Sights in New Orleans
New Orleans is a city with true spirit, home of “keepin’ it weird.” It’s “the” city that never sleeps. New York, L.A., and Chicago have nothing on this place. It can be wild, fun, and adventurous if you let it, but I’ve seen its corrupt and dangerous side, too. Luckily, over the two nights we stayed … Continue reading
Ashland, Oregon: Everything but Shakespeare
When my friend Cassie asked if we’d like to join her and a friend on a getaway to Ashland, Oregon, I said, “absolutely!” I’d only driven through Ashland by way of I-5 and had never really explored what it had to offer. Cassie rented an Airbnb for us at one of Ashland’s premier Victorian homes. The … Continue reading
Austin, Texas: Weird, Eclectic, and Yummy
Is Portland Oregon’s sister city of Austin really more weird than us? That’s the question I tried to answer for myself on my recent trip to Austin, Texas. I traveled to Austin on business, but I managed to get out of the conference headquarters a few times during the week. My mission was to see Austin alive with … Continue reading
Baja: Carnival Cruising
Once in L.A., we were picked up by the cruise line’s own coach bus and taken directly to the ship. It was exciting to see a large vessel like this for the first time and the check-in process was great. This would be the biggest boat I’d ever been on, for sure. The ship held over 2,000 passengers, 900 crew, and weighed 70,367 tons. OK, so it’s not the largest ship in the Carnival fleet, but it’s big enough. Continue reading
Hollywood’s Celluloid Heroes
Even with a quick trip to Hollywood, California, you have to stop to see Hollywood Blvd., right? Well, that’s just what I did. From my hotel I could see the Hollywood sign, although that is as close as I got to it. I still got a sense of its glory and symbolism rising from the … Continue reading
San Francisco on my Mind
One of the reasons San Francisco has been on my mind is because of this crazy freezing weather we have been having across the country. Even San Francisco, where it generally stays around 55 degrees this time of year, is freezing cold. It is this climate that had me thinking over the summer. I actually … Continue reading
Washington D.C.: Fill Your Tummy with Yummy!
You can’t visit a city like this without finding some amazing foods to fill your tummy. Of course there are many to choose from, but here are a couple you really should consider. The restaurants you must try… Ben’s Chili Bowl is one of those places where you’d better know what you want when you get … Continue reading
